This experience is designed for students enrolled in an introductory course on Organizational Communication. Students will gain foundational skills in understanding and improving communication processes within organizations and. In addition, a key focus of this experience will be how organizations engage with the communities they serve. Students will analyze communication challenges and propose practical solutions, making them valuable contributors to projects that require effective communication strategies. By applying their knowledge, learners can help organizations enhance internal and external communication, fostering better collaboration and engagement.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Key skills/tasks will include:

  • Using transcripts to perform communication audits and identify strengths and areas for improvement
  • Engaging in direct community engagement with a partner organization
  • Analyzing internal and external communication strategies and modalities
  • Designing a feedback mechanism for communication effectiveness
  • Presentation of findings and recommendations to stakeholders


Associated deliverables will be collaboratively determined with the partner organization. The primary goal is for students to develop an engagement toolkit aimed at reaching and mobilizing a community they are a part of. Ideally, students will present this toolkit and a communication plan to the partner organization for feedback.
